What is Water Quality?

Water Quality describes the condition of the water. It measures how safe water is for drinking, swimming, and other water-based activities.

Why is Water Quality Important?

Humans depend on water! We use water for everything from drinking to cooking to playing. If the water is polluted, it can make us sick.

How is Water Quality Measured?

Water Quality is measured by testing the water for different chemicals and bacteria. The most common tests are for E. coli, phosphorus, and nitrogen. After the water is tested, it is given a color.

What do the Colors Mean?

The colors tell us how much bacteria is in the water.

  • Green: The water is safe to swim in.
  • Yellow: The water is safe to swim in, but you should be careful. Make sure to shower when you get home and wash your hands extra well before eating food!
  • Red: The water is not safe to swim in. Do not go in!

No matter what color it is, it is always reccomended to wash your hands, take a shower afterwards, avoid drinking the water, and avoid contact with open wounds

How can I tell what the water quality is?

It depends on where you are! Some beaches have signs or flags that tell you the water quality. Bradford beach has these water quality signs right next to safety signs. Other beaches have websites that tell you the water quality. To find out the water quality at your beach, visit the Swim Guide website.
